This is the second time that I have read this book, and I am HOOKED! Witemeyer has a unique ability to make characters come alive and making her readers feel as if they are part of the story. I truly enjoyed that the problems these characters faced were not each other, overhearing the wrong thing or overreacting, but it was more them vs. another enemy. However, you might find yourself frustrated with the fact that Nicole cannot convince herself to stay when we all know she should.
Synopsis
Nicole Renard, the heir to the prosperous Renard shipping, comes home due to her father’s failing health. When their rivals break in and threaten to take Renard’s prized possession, Nicole’s father becomes spooked and sends his daughter to find an heir. Wanting to please her father and protect her family, Nicole takes the dagger with her. Meanwhile, Darius Thornton is on a mission to save humanity from devastating boiler explosions. After living through the boiler explosion on the Louisiana, Darius begins his experiments but is in dire need of a male secretary. When a pretty brunette comes in to fulfill the role, he scoffs but gives her a chance. Soon the two realize their attraction, but will Nicole choose her happiness over her father’s dream?
WARNING:
Two men break into the Renards house and threaten to break Mrs. Renard’s fingers to get what they want. Throughout the book, these two men are out to get Nicole and often use force. When they catch up to Nicole, they threaten to shoot a little boy, search under Nicole’s skirt and even dunk her head in the river multiple times to get the dagger. When they get what they want, they push Nicole in the river, forcing Darius to swim after her. She is fine but not breathing at first, leaving Darius to do chest compressions. During the boiler explosion, Witemeyer talks of Darius seeing people dead and injured. While trying to save people on the sinking ship, Darius attempts to save a twelve-year-old girl, but she drops into the ocean before he can save her. She dies despite Darius’s efforts leaving him with the need to stop the explosions. Darius gets burned and almost killed during one of his explosions but is saved by Nicole. The two kiss often but nothing further.
