The Help

Author: Kathryn Stockett

Rating: 3

My Opinion:

The Help is well known to many people. Some know it from the movie and others from the book. Personally, I watched the movie before ever reading the book, so to my surprise I knew most of the events that happened. Most people know that when a book is put into a movie most of the events are mixed up, the details are moved around or just emitted all together. I have to applaud the makers of the Help movie for keeping the spirit of the book alive. Now, about the actual book: I thought the book was good and it kept me on my toes; however, at times, it was a little too much drama for me. I read it all the way through, but I will probably not read it again.

Synopsis:

This book follows the account of three brave women who live in Mississippi around 1962. At this time in America, racism was still running rampant throughout the streets. Two of the main characters experience this in their everyday lives. Minny and Aibileen are two African American women who work for white women as their maids. Through the book you are walked through their everyday life of serving mean spirited women and others not so mean. The other women in the book is named Skeeter and she is different from the other two. Skeeter is a twenty-two year old caucasian girl who studied to be a writer in college. After coming home she learns the truth of her best friend and what happens behind closed doors. Minny, Aibileen, and Skeeter work together to write a book about the good and bad of life as the help; however, they did not escape the consequences that easily.

WARNING:

Racism is talked about from cover to cover so this book is not meant for sensitive readers. The N word is used many times in this book which I would normally skip over it in my brain and continue reading. I do this a lot in books if there is a word that I don't care to say out loud I will skip it in books. A kid in the book is beaten and injured, but its more like a second hand story.
